On the Friday and Saturday nights of the July 4th weekend, Eye In Queue (Neil Peplinski and Aaron Netsell) played some great live music here at the winery. What we didn’t know is that they had written a song about the winery on their drive up and played it a few times for us. Well, we love it and, luckily, recorded video of it; they also recorded a studio version of it after they returned home. Thanks again to Eye In Queue for coming out and for what will become our theme song, “45 North Blues”! Watch the video and download the studio version below:

In the meantime, check out some audio samples from their first album, “Wait and See”.

Recalling Steve Martin’s role as Navin Johnson in The Jerk when asked by the wine steward whether he would like another bottle of Chateau Latour, I recall his response: “Yes, but no more 1966, let’s splurge! Bring us some fresh wine! The freshest you’ve got—this year’s. No more of this old stuff.” The steward responsed, “Oui”, and once out of sight, Navin continues, “He doesn’t realize he’s dealing with sophisticated people here.”
Obviously I’m dealing with a sophisticated audience of wine aficienados and would like to delve into the entire wine tasting experience and how it can be taken to a new level. Gathering around friends and family, I have found wine tastings to be a means of comraderie, taste sensations, post graduate levels of intensity and just great fun. Gulping is out along with…

A finishing touché in fencing indicates the final hit or touch with the epee or sword indicating ultimate victory, but in literature it is also a final acknowledgement of a telling or obvious statement.
Now that you’re horribly bored, I’m using the title of this blog entry as a play on words as the tasting room nears completion with just a few finishing touches. Almost everything is in place for a “soft opening” in February which will correspond to several releases of our 2009 vintages. Although 2009 was a bit of a struggle for Michigan winemakers, our winemaker Shawn Walters and his cellarmaster, David Hill, with help from Jason Buckler have created some masterful wines, carefully blending Washington state juices, high in sugar and pH, with our Michigan juices, low in sugar and pH. He has kept the ratios…
